The Quiet

Here's the first appearance of The Quiet which contains an initial explanation:

Here is a more general entry on the subject:

The Quiet are those that have dropped out of society, given up all pretense of social humanity. They are slow suicides. They renounce worldly possessions. They take vows of silence and abstinence. They fast. They disappear and turn away from the world.

Those that turn, do so abruptly and finally. They ignore family and friends and enemies. They leave the city and they do not work. Those that start along this path place a single stitch through their lips as a sign of commitment. This is renewed each year with another stitch. The aged Quiet are simply sewn shut, not needing to speak, eat, see, hear, breathe, etc. They have reached ultimate stasis. They take in nothing and they expel nothing.

Novices still interact to some very limited degree with the speaking world, though with each passing year the newly Quiet withdraw a little more. There is no stated code nor unifying system of belief nor internal government. Many Quiet even shun each other. Eventually, the ancient Quiet simply and unknowingly disappear.

With this in mind, the statements in the comic ("Music of the Universe", etc.) are pure speculation. None that are Quiet have revealed any reasons why, and frankly no one reason would explain them all.
